SEVIEW - Best Tier 2 Program

SEVIEW was ranked as the best tier 2 transport and fate program as part of a review conducted for the Alberta Environment (AE) regulatory agency. The project was conducted to assist AE in the selection of software suitable for site-specific risk assessments and for the development of generic risk-based objectives for soil and groundwater. A total of 248 programs were evaluated in two phases. Phase I consisted of a review of program documentation, discussions with developers, and program expertise. As part of phase II the remaining 43 programs were evaluated based on 17 parameters. Phase II results including evaluation parameters and weighting factors are presented in Table 1. The top five programs were further evaluated for strengths, weaknesses, and applicability. The top five programs are:

  • VS2DI,
  • SEVIEW,
  • HYDRUS-1D and HYDRUS-2D
  • UNSATCHEM
  • CHEMFLOW-2000
Recommendations

Based on the evaluation SEVIEW was rated as the best tier 2 program and number two overall.

"The SEVIEW commercial package incorporating SESOIL, AT123D and BIOSCREEN is recommended for Tier 2 analysis"

The report goes on to state:

"Although SESOIL, AT123D and BIOSCREEN can be obtained as public-domain codes at no cost, MDH strongly recommends the SEVIEW interface for its ability to simplify and speed the site screening process."
Discussion

It is not surprising that SEVIEW ranked as high as it did. After all regulatory agencies around the world have selected SESOIL and AT123D to develop generic cleanup objectives. There are many reasons for this including the following capabilities:

  • Varying soil permeabilities with depth
  • Seasonal variations in contaminant transport and fate

As the AE review indicates not all programs are created equal. Just because a program contains SESOIL does not mean it is as good as SEVIEW. This is because specific SESOIL capabilities vary from program to program. Furthermore SEVIEW contains advanced features that make modeling much easier.
